Get excited, kids. Golf is in our blood. Your ancestor, Black Donald McDuck actually invented the sport. Of course he lost so badly that the ensuing temper tantrum caused King James to ban golfing across all of Scotland.
In "The Missing Links of Moorshire!", Black Donald is credited with the invention of golf. However, due to his temper (which also earned him the nickname Black Donald), he also got it banned by King James in 1457.[1]
Trivia[]
According to Scrooge, his temper was the reason why King James II banned golf across Scotland. However, in real life, King James banned golf so his soldiers would practice archery instead of playing golf, as he considered archery necessary for defending Scotland.
Black Donald first appeared in Don Rosa's initial prologue to "The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck", which also mentioned him inventing golf. The prologue was scrapped, but the unfinished illustrations appears in various hardcover volumes collecting Rosa's work. DuckTales is the first official appearance of the character.
