Disney's Studio Program was a department within the Walt Disney Company that produced comics, starting in the early 1960s, and created several DuckTales comics in the late 1980s.
Overview[]
Although US-based, the Studio Program focused on the oversea market, where the demand for Disney comics had grown stronger than it was in North America. Consequently, the majority of the thousands of comics that the Studio produced was never published in the United States, and many of the characters that frequented them remained obscure for American readers of Disney comics; e.g. Fethry Duck and John D. Rockerduck.
However - following the success with DuckTales in 1987, many of the Studio Program's DuckTales stories did appear in American comic books (ten of them were even produced directly for the American market, for the DuckTales Magazine). The majority remains unpublished in the US to this day, though.
Listed below are all the Studio Program's DuckTales stories. Artists for all of the stories are Jaime Diaz Studio (most notably including Cosme Quartieri) in Argentina, while the writers are noted when known. Besides the first two produced, every story has an original script.
Besides one-shot creations, the characters that appeared in these comics were the same that appeared in the cartoon; the one addition being Donald's Grandma Duck, a well-established Disney character that never made it to the animated series, but appeared in a couple of the comics.
Worth noticing, some stories created before DuckTales premiered and thus not set in the DuckTales continuity, were given the DuckTales brand (and, in some case, getting minor changes in the dialogue) when printed in the US. These are noted as "'False' DuckTales stories" below.
The Studio Program ended in 1990, as Disney opted to establish a full-fledged comic book publishing arm - Disney Comics.
