Ludwig Von Drake debuts in this episode as the director of S.H.U.S.H., where he assists Scrooge and Mrs. Beakley during their early collaboration as spies. He was going to hold an introduction on Black Heron but she had already read up on her and suspected that she worked for F.O.W.L.. It frustrated Ludwig that Beakley had figured out so much of it before he got the chance to get to the point. Ludwig then partnered Beakley up with Scrooge as the auction they were a high class even where the page they suspected Black Heron was attending to get the last page from the legendary great book. He gives Scrooge one of his inventions, a cane with multiple built-in gadgets. He warns Scrooge to learn to use the cane correctly or it could kill them all but the warning fall on deaf ears and they all get knocked out by knock out gass.
Ludwig's children Corvus, Anya and Klara are seen during Scrooge and Glomgold's presentation on who is the most fitted in ensuring the safety of Ludwig's Doomsday vault, which he built in the event that the world was facing a catastrophic extinction. Ludwig is later seen as a recording simulation guiding Dewey Duck and Della Duck through the safety gates of the vault. Once they enter the vault, Ludwig explains to them that he had every seed imaginable inside each vault, including the rarest and even mythological ones. He also explained that he had invented a super growth formula for the plants, in the event that for any visitors entering the vault during a supposed upcoming apocalypse, they could use the formula to speed up the process rather than waiting for them to normally grow and possibly causing the visitors to starve to death.
In the 60s, some time prior to the formation of F.O.W.L., Ludwig is seen speaking to Bradford Buzzard, who proposes that S.H.U.S.H. attempt to reign in chaos by taking over the world. Ludwig rejects this notion as preposterous and sends him on his way, unaware that the buzzard will go on to found F.O.W.L. At some point between then and the pressent Bradford had arranged for Ludwig to be captured and held as a prissoner of F.O.W.L. Since no one has heard from Ludwig since then and given his agen it is fair to assume most took it as a sign that Ludwig was not alive any longer.
When Huey Duck finds Gyro Gearloose and Gandra Dee in holding cells in the Library of Alexandria, Ludwig interrupts their conversation from his own neighboring cell. Gyro is astonished by the fact that Ludwig is still alive, given his advanced age even some sixty years ago. Ludwig reveals that F.O.W.L. captured him and kept him alive through various means so they can forced him to help them in their evil schemes, which caused him to not die. He reveals the truth to Huey that Bradford hates adventure due to this happening during his childhood and wishes to get rid of everything and everyone associated with it. Huey is soon thrown into a cell next to Ludwig, who pulls out a harmonic and starts singing the blues.
Dewey and Louie soon arrive and rescue their brother, only to be captured by May and June, who tie the three of them, Gandra, Gyro, and Ludwig up and bring them to a room where Webby Vanderquack is also captive. The group watches as Bradford delivers his ultimatum to Scrooge, but Huey is baffled when Bradford claims to be in possession of the Papyrus of Binding, which can only be recovered by a direct descendant of Scrooge's. Having learned that Webby, like May and June, was created on Bradford's orders, Huey asks Ludwig who her genetic source was. He responds that it was none other than Scrooge, and seems surprised when everyone else in the room proves to have been ignorant of this fact.
May and June, having learned the limited purpose behind their creation and just how expendable they are to Bradford, free their captives. Ludwig, Gyro, and Gandra work together to shut down the Solego Circuit vortex, thwarting Bradford's scheme and allowing Scrooge's family to finally defeat the villainous vulture. Ludwig then stands alongside the McDuck/Duck family and their various allies as they look upon Bradford's failure and subsequent punishment at the hands of several other villains whom he had taken prisoner. What happens to him and the rest of the group after Scrooge and family and team left for home afterwards is not seen.
Bentina Beakley, also called Agent 22, is employed as a S.H.U.S.H. as an agent where Ludwig is the director. He appears to see her as a top agent, as he wants her to go after Black Heron during a mission as shown in "From the Confidential Casefiles of Agent 22!". Ludwig is glad she is in early, but gets frustrated with her when she constantly manage to get the point out faster than him. He also assigns her a new partner Scrooge McDuck, even though it is clear she is none to happy about it. Ludwig appears to take pride in his agents and wanting them to succeed. Sometime between the 1960's and the present, he was captured by F.O.W.L., leaving Beakley unsure of his whereabouts until F.O.W.L.S final defeat. Bentina become the new director after Ludwig showing that his trust in her as a top agent was well placed as she is capable of doing so.
It is unknown how Scrooge and Ludwig became acquainted, but at some point Ludwig hired Scrooge as a freelance agent for S.H.U.S.H. Scrooge wasn't to keen on sitting down and learning how to properly use the action cane that Ludwig had made for him in "From the Confidential Casefiles of Agent 22!". The fact that Scrooge was wealthy already in the 1960's was something Ludwig could use, as it gave them access to the high class event where the page of the Great Book was being auctioned, and Scrooge didn't mind using his status for S.H.U.S.H. Many years later Scrooge tries to win a contract from the Von Drake siblings to repair the Doomsday Vault in "Raiders of the Doomsday Vault!". Scrooge points out that the vault was something that Ludwig made for his children to secure, something that moves them a lot after hearing his proposal.
It must be assumed that Ludwig and Bradford knew each for a long time, since it is established in The First Adventure! that Ludwig knew Isabella Finch and therefore must have known her grandson Bradford. Sometime later Ludwig gave Bradford the job of accountant for S.H.U.S.H. as a favour for Isabella. However Bradford was displeased that whenever S.H.U.S.H. had to stop a villain, they threw the world into chaos and the was draining the finances of the company. Bradford suggested to Ludwig than rather than waiting for the next villain to react, they would take over the world, capture all who opposed them and rule the world from within the shadows. Ludwig wanted nothing to do with it and laughed at it asking what an accountant knew of such things. This made Bradford turn to Black Heron and funded F.O.W.L. with her. Even so he continued in his position as an accountant of S.H.U.S.H. Sometime after that, Bradford arranged for Ludwig to be captured and held as a prisoner of F.O.W.L. From there on out, Ludwig was forced to work for the same organization he wanted to stop as shown in "From the Confidential Casefiles of Agent 22!" where he show a disdain for Black Heron and suspecting her of working for F.O.W.L. During his time as prisoner he was forced to carry out the evil will of Bradford which saddened him as shown in "The Last Adventure!". All this kept him so busy he never got around to die and is therefore alive when most of the Duck Family, lead by Scrooge McDuck, comes to battle Bradford. Ludwig was the one to warn Huey Duck that Bradford was not as kind and understanding, as he tried to trick Huey into thinking he was. He told Huey that Bradford hated his grandmother and her adventures, and wanted to get rid of it due to its disturbance in his business operations. Ludwig was also aware of the fact that Bradford was both the first and worst woodchuck, showing how much he knew Bradford over the years he was captured.
Black Heron was referred to as a 'real bad egg' by Beakley/Agent 22 in "From the Confidential Casefiles of Agent 22!" when she is reading through the file of Black Heron that is made by Ludwig. Both Ludwig and Beakley suspect that she is working for F.O.W.L. In any, case the two of them mutually dislike Black Heron and the sentiment was much the same for Heron herself. Black Heron most likely met Ludwig on several times after he became a prisoner for them, given her position in F.O.W.L. Black Heron shows no regret in holding Ludwig as a prisoner and cutting him off from all his friends and family, as well as forcing him to work for an organization he had dedicated much of his working life to take down.
The Von Drake siblings are the three children of Ludwig. They consist of Anya Von Drake, Corvus Von Drake and Klara Von Drake. While little is known about the relationship with his three children, it can be assumed it is very positive. In "Raiders of the Doomsday Vault!", Scrooge McDuck and Flintheart Glomgold compete about winning the contract to repair the Doomsday Vault. Scrooge reminds them the vault was made to secure his three children in the midst of his proposal, as well as to see all three of them thrive in an unknown future. Given how teary eyed they got at this, it is assumed they feel very connected and was very fond of their father and certainly still miss him. Given that Ludwig was captured by F.O.W.L. and no one knew what had happened to him, the three children most likely got the message that their father had disappeared in the line of his work. They are therefore unaware whether or not he is alive, but given his age they most likely think he isn't.
