In the DuckTales 2017 television series, Moon Mites are a kind of gigantic alien mite-like creature living on the Moon. They feed on metal to survive, which is scarce on most of the Moon's surface.
Appearance[]
Moon Mites have a grey, vaguely arachnid appearance with a massive cephalothorax, four relatively small legs, four eyes and cuttlefish-like mouth parts. They are, however, very expressive creatures, as their four eyes can blink much like vertebrate eyes and convey a wide range of human-like emotion. Their eyes are red when they are hungry or agitated, but turn blue when they are at peace. Their mouths secrete a highly corrosive pea soup-green spit that can instantly rapidly dissolve metal into a liquid form they can feed upon. On top of the cephalothorax above the eyes, Moon Mites have antennae that glow and point in a direction when they sense the presence of food.
History[]
First appearing in the episode "What Ever Happened to Della Duck?!", one solitary Moon Mite is responsible for hindering Della Duck's attempts both to repair the wrecked Spear of Selene and to construct beacons out of wreckage metal that might be visible to an Earth-based rescue attempt. Della has an antagonistic conflict with the Moon Mite during her ten years of exile, and the creature gradually inflicts worsening damage on the spacecraft, culminating in the complete destruction of its Gold Tech engine. It finally becomes clear that the Moon Mites are not villains, but merely fellow creatures trying desperately to survive in a sparse environment, and like Della, they also have children of their own to care about. An alien civilization based in the secret Moon city of Tranquility had also been in conflict with the lone Moon Mite for some time, but Della managed to end both conflicts by treating the Moon Mite and her offspring with compassion and letting them eat the gold dental filling she had been saving to refuel to spacecraft. As it turned out, in their blind antagonism with the Moon Mites, the people of Tranquility were effectively hoarding vast resources of gold, a metal they themselves regarded as worthless and expendable, which they could have easily fed to the Moon Mites in exchange for peaceful coexistence.
