"The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck" ("Lo$" for short) is a comic book serial consisting of 12 chapters and several additional chapters, written and illustrated by Don Rosa. It is one of the inspirations for DuckTales 2017, especially for an episode.
The serial, which was first published in Denmark in 1992-1994, chronicles Scrooge McDuck from early childhood to his old age. Much of it is based on details from Carl Barks' Uncle Scrooge comics. Following the conclusion of the serials, Rosa added several "companion" chapters, and in 1993, the "Donald Duck Family Tree", mapping out the characters' genealogy.
Besides themes and character traits, the comics also introduce several characters that have been featured in the cartoon – most notably members of the Clan McDuck and the Duck Family, such as Hortense McDuck and her husband Quackmore Duck, as well as their daughter, Della Duck; Matilda McDuck; Downy and Fergus McDuck; and Molly and Dingus McDuck.
While Rosa's work has been influential to DuckTales, the cartoon is not an actual adaptation of or sequel to Lo$. Among the most notable differences is the fact that Scrooge's parents are alive and well in the television series, although they die in the comics.
